Game Log 4 – Create
From the beginning to the end of the idealizing part of the process, we always wanted our game to revolve around the Óbidos reunion that contributed to the Carnation Revolution. We believed that it was fitting for the occasion, since we are staying in Óbidos and the theme of the jam had to do with the Carnation Revolution, but also because it seems to be a part of the revolution no-one seems to talk much, so we thought that bringing it to light would also be interesting. Gameplay wise we never derivated much from 2D and point-&-click. It seemed the most doable with the timeframe that we had and it seemed to be the option that allowed us to pay tribute to the occasion the best.
On the art aspect of things, we didn't fully know what we wanted to do but we had some games that we used for references as a starting point. We decided that for example for our characters since we'd have a couple of them that we shouldn't do anything too detailed, so we opted for an approach that focused more on the shadows and shapes of each character, using inspirations from painters that grew up and painted under the dictatorship like Amadeo de Souza and Paula Rego. For other elements present in the game, we decided to take a more realistic approach with grime-y and less vibrant colors.
We decided to organize our thoughts regarding the game design and programming logic on various flowcharts to help with our work process. We expanded and modified these flowcharts as we went on to fit our current situation and help each member do what they were doing in a more efficient manner. Everything went on quite smoothly on every division of the project, but as we reached the dialogue part of the game we reached a bit of a roadblock since none of us knew how to make a dialogue system for what we wanted, but luckily a member from another team was kind enough to inform us of something called Yarn, a script that eased the dialogue making process and allowed it to be used in Unity. From then on, everything was a bit easier but still took a bit of time since we had to fix a couple of things here and there due to our inexperience with the script.
Although we had to squeeze every single minute worth of time to finish the project, we were able to do a build of the game that transmitted what we most wanted with the most vital parts we had envisioned. Some of the things we had planned and written down for the game may have been too ambitious or too complicated to put in with our limited time and they ended up not being present in the this version, but once again, we were able to get the core idea of the game we had imagined out there.
